Russia successfully tests S-400 Triumf air defense system

Russia's Southern Military District has successfully tested its new air defense system S-400 Triumf in line with plans to replace its S-300 PM systems.

The Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported on Saturday that the successful target-shooting trials of the new system have brought Russia's Southern Military District one step closer to adopting the S-400 Triumf.

The S-400 Triumph (NATO Designation SA-21 Growler) air defense missile system is an upgrade of the S-300 family. It is reportedly capable of intercepting and destroying airborne targets such as aircraft, and ballistic and cruise missiles at distances of up to 400 kilometers (250 miles), which is twice the range of the US-made MIM-104 Patriot, and two-and-a-half times that of Russia's S-300PMU2.

The system is also believed to be able to destroy stealth aircraft, cruise missiles and ballistic missiles, and is effective at ranges of up to 3,500 kilometers (2,200 miles) and speeds of up to 4.8 kilometers (three miles) per second.

Russia has so far deployed four S-400 regiments to protect the airspace around Moscow, in the Far East and in the Baltic exclave of Kaliningrad.

The Southern Military District, created in October 2010, comprises the republics of Adygea, Dagestan, Ingushetia, Kabardino-Balkaria, Kalmykia, Karachay-Cherkessia, North Ossetia, Chechnya, and the Krasnodar, Stavropol, Astrakhan, Volgograd and Rostov regions.

I don't think Russia needs any of those expensive missiles for the time being; the US or NATO aren't interested in attacking Russia , but, on the other side, Russia has the burning desire to attack NATO or even the United States.

The problem with Russia is that it always try to be one of the super-powers while it has a lot of internal problems it can not solve due to its severe poverty!

Russia should focus on extending her international influence especialy in having a healthy share in international trade.
Having a domestic grown economy is not enough for them.
