In this thread we are going to discuss the major roles of language in the community.
Human language has various roles in the society as explained below.
Roles of language in the society
1. Medium of communication:
Language is a medium of communication between people. We use language to convey messages to others.
2. Social development:
Language can be used to transfer knowledge from one person to another. The shared knowledge helps people to improve their things hence foster development in societies.
3. National identity:
Language can also be used to identify certain nation or group of people or society. For example, Chinese language identify China nation.
4. Social stratification:
Language can be used to differentiate people of different classes. For example, the language used by educated people is usually quite different from the one used by uneducated people.
5. Unity:
Language unifies people, this because people who speak the same language always feel as one.
6. Cultural reflection:
Language reflects the culture of the society of its users. For example the language used by agricultural societies may have many words relating to agriculture.
