Major Geoffrey Obwoge fought to the last minute in the battle of El Adde. From an armoured personnel carrier, he engaged Al-Shabaab fighters, cutting down wave after wave of attackers as they overran the camp. Soon, a barrage of rocket-propelled grenades struck his vehicle, setting it ablaze and leaving it disabled.
With flames consuming the vehicle, Major Obwoge pushed open the hatch and rose to look across the camp. The sight before him was devastating—his fallen comrades lay scattered across the battlefield as tents burned in the background. He slowly shook his head in disbelief and grief, realizing he was among the last men still standing.
Surrounded by Al-Shabaab fighters who mocked him and demanded that he surrender, Major Obwoge refused to yield. Calm and unflinching, he stared back at the gunmen. One terrorist shot him, but even then he remained on his feet. Only after several more attackers opened fire did he finally collapse into the burning armoured vehicle, having fought to his very last breath. He died a hero.
