'World's poorest president' gets $1mn offer for old VW Beetle

An Arab sheikh seems to think the 'world’s poorest president,' Uruguay’s Jose Mujica, is in dire need of cash. He’s offered $1 million for Mujica’s iconic 1987 VW Beetle – but the pot-smoking leader says he will donate the money to the homeless instead.
“I didn’t give it any importance,” the humble ex-guerilla leader told a news conference, after the Uruguayan weekly Busqueda broke the story. He added that he has “no commitment to cars” and joked that his three-legged dog, Manuela, was pretty much the prime reason for holding on to the vehicle for so long.

Apparently it was Mexico’s ambassador to Uruguay who earlier suggested that Mujica sell off the car. They joked about how he could get 10 4WD trucks for the money, according to an anonymous source within the embassy.

In case the $1 million materializes, Mujica plans to donate the entire proceedings to a housing support program for the homeless. In case it’s the trucks, he has pledged to donate them to the country’s public health office, or to his campaign workers.

The president explained his decision by saying: "Human beings have a bit of fetishism; we need certain material symbols,” and added that he still keeps his father’s old hammer and shovel: "They are little things to the world, but are worth a lot to you."

The leader lives on a run-down farm, which is under his wife’s name. The only other prized possession of real material value he reportedly owns is the 1987 Beetle.

As far as official declarations of wealth go, Mujica earns a comfortable $11,000 a month, 20 percent of which goes to his political movement. He reportedly donates most of the rest of his salary to charities supporting the poor.

The social climate in Uruguay changed in 2010, when Mujica secured his victory. The former guerilla led a radical overhaul of drug policies on cannabis possession, setting a blueprint for other Latin American countries. The legalization of cannabis enabled Uruguayan authorities to combat the neighboring Paraguayan drug trade.

Mujica is widely seen as one of the world’s most down-to-earth leaders, who has often emphasized the need for people to love one another and not focus on the material.

"A president is a high-level official who is elected to carry out a function. He is not a king, not a god. He is not the witch doctor of a tribe who knows everything. He is a civil servant. I think the ideal way of living is to live like the vast majority of people whom we attempt to serve and represent," he once told Al Jazeera.

As for addictions, the only one Mujica says matters is "love."

Alipohijiwa kuhusu kuitwa Rais masikini/fukara wa dunia, alipokua katika mji wa Montevideo katika shamba analoishi lenye nyumba ndogo ya chumba kimoja (Small but cozy one bed-room home set) alikua na haya ya kusema:

"Kama ntaamrisha raia waishi kama mimi, basi wataniua (Yani akiamrisha watu waishi maisha ya kawaida na kuacha anasa na majivuno)".

Aliendelea kusema wanaomuita yeye ni masikini wanashindwa kuelewa maana ya utajiri.

"Mimi sio rais masikini duniani, masikini ni yule anaehitaji mambo/pesa nyingi ili aweze kuishi. Maisha ninayoishi ni matokeo ya maumivu nliopitia katika haya maisha. Mimi ni mtoto wa historia yangu mwenyewe (I am the son of my own history). Kuna miaka nimepitia katika maisha furaha yangu ilitokana na kuwa na kirago (matress) cha kulalia tu."

Mwandishi anasema alivyokua anakaribia kukutana na Rais Wa Uruguay, alikutana na kizuizi kimoja getini ambacho kilikua na walinzi wawili tu, na mbwa wa Rais mwenye miguu mitatu (Three Legged Dog, Manuela).

Rais Mujica ni mtu mtanashati, mwenye muonekano wa kawaida sana. Anavaa nguo zilizotumika (Mtumba), viatu vilivyotumika (Well Used Footwear). Ni mtu ambae mzalendo wa nchi yake - Nchi ambayo ni salama zaidi na yenye rusha kwa kiwango cha chini zaidi, nchi ambayo inatoa elimu na kompyuta za bure kwa kila mtoto.

Uruguay ndio nchi pekee iliopitisha sheria ya kufyagia tatizo la matumizi na kilimo cha bangi (Cannabis) duniani, sheria ambayo imetua mzigo kwa serikali ya Uruguay kushughulikia/kusimamia KILIMO CHA BANGI, USAMBAZAJI WA BANGI, NA UUZWAJI WA BANGI .

Jambo ambalo limeisababishia Uruguay kutupiwa sifa na nchi nyingi duniani. Alipoulizwa kuhusu maamuzi hayo, Rais Mujica alisema;

"Nchi yangu haipo wazi sana kuhusu maswala yanayoendelea. Ila hili swala la kuhalalisha matumizi na kilimo cha bangi lipo wazi na logic sana. Kuruhusu kilimo na matumizi ya bangi nchini sio kwamba tunataka KWENDA NA WAKATI . Hapana. Tunachotaka ni kuwaondoa watumiaji wa bangi kwenda kwenye magenge ya wauzaji bangi na madawa ya kulevya (Cartels). Na pia tutawafungia kutumia kama watavuka mipaka ya matumizi kwa muda. Ni sawa na kunywa pombe, mtu akinywa chupa nzima ya whiskey basi anatakiwa apewe msaada wa kupunguza."

Alipoulizwa kuhusu siasa za magharibi na dunia kwa ujumla, alisema "Sisi tunafikiri kama binaadamu na nchi, sio kama kabila la viumbe". Na anashangazwa sana na MAANDAMANO NA MAKUNDI yanayochochewa na baadhi ya nchi na umoja wa baadhi ya wafanyakazi ndani ya nchi yake, ili kuhamasisha mapinduzi, ila yenyewe maandamano ambayo hufa na kuyayuka hata kabla ya kushika kasi ya kuleta machafuko na vurugu.

Aalisema "Natumai hao wanaoshawishiwa kuunda matabaka na kuandamana na mataifa ya nje, watakufa kwa maradhi ya kisasa (kutaka maisha ya kisasa), ila naamini sitokua sahihi kwa hilo".

HISTORIA YA MAISHA YAKE:
Kupigwa risasi, kukamatwa, kufungwa kisha kuchaguliwa kuwa Rais.

1969 - Alikua miongoni mwa kundi la waasi (Tupamaros Rev. Group). Kazi yao ilikua ni kuiba vyakula na pesa kwenye mabenki na kisha kugawa kwa raia wa hali ya chini.

1970 - Alikamatwa kwa mara ya kwanza (Kati ya mara 4 alizowahi kukamatwa). Mujica alitoroka katika gereza la Punta Carretas, alipigwa risasi mara kadhaa pindi alipokua anapambana na walinzi wa gereza.

1972 - Alikamatwa na kufungwa tena. Alitumikia kifungo cha zaidi ya miaka 10, ambayo miaka 2 alitumikia kifungo cha kutegwa/kuewekwa peke yake (Solitary Confinment) ndani ya kisima, jambo ambalo lilimfanya awe anaongea/kupiga story na VYURA/WADUDU ili asiwehuke na kutokwa na akili zake.

1985 - Demokrasia ilirudishwa nchini Uruguay, na Mujica alitolewa kwa sheria ya msamaha.

1994 - Alichaguliwa kuwa Makamu Wa Rais, na aliwasili katika Bunge La Uruguay akiwa anaendesha pikipiki aina ya VESPA . Mlinzi wa parking alimuuliza "Hivi utakua hapa kwa muda mrefu? Au unapita tu?".

2009 - Alishinda Urais. Na alisema maneno machache ambayo "Yote maongezi na ahadi ambazo zinatolewa na watu tofauti tofauti (Akitumia msamiati LIPS SERVICE ), dunia haiwezi kubadilika".

2013 - Aliruhusu sheria ya kulima, kuuza na matumizi ya bangi. Alichosema bungeni "Sio kwamba hili tunapitisha ili tuwe HURU NA WAWAZI , bali tunapitisha sheria hii ili kuwaondoa watu kwenye makundi ya wauza madawa haramu. Ili tuwasaidie."

Jose Alberto 'Pepe' Mujica Cordano, is a former Uruguayan president that was born on 21 May 1935, though he is poor but he is a highly respected man in Uruguay. President Mujica has put away the luxurious house that the Uruguayan state provides for its leaders and decided to stay at his wife's farmhouse, off a dirt road outside the capital, Montevideo.

What made Mujica different,special and unique when compared to the other presidents that have served Uruguay was his act of generosity and benevolence toward the citizen of the country. He chose to live in a simple house located in a rural area outside Montevideo despite having access to the presidential mansion.

Today most world leaders are more concerned about looting the country's funds and living a luxurious lifestyle. Most of these leaders only loot for their own interests and that of their families at heart. They do not care about the poor neither do they think about their subjects who voted them in they enjoy being treated as first class citizens and do not joke with the luxuries their positions offer them.

He has been described as "the world's humblest head of state" due to the fact that he donates about 90% of his monthly salary, equivalent to $12,000 (£7,500), to charity, And that has led him to be labelled the poorest president in the world.
