A group of residents displaced by the Standard Gauge Railway (SGR) project in Tororo Town have staged a protest in Kasoli Village, accusing authorities of delaying compensation for nearly a decade.
The affected persons, largely landlords whose properties were earmarked for the railway corridor, say their assets were assessed and promises of payment made, but no compensation has been received to date.
During the protest, the residents expressed frustration over what they described as prolonged uncertainty and economic hardship, arguing that the delay has disrupted livelihoods and stalled development plans tied to their land and property.
Some of the protesters said they have been unable to rebuild or invest elsewhere due to the pending compensation, leaving them in a state of limbo.
The protesting residents are now demanding immediate action, including a clear compensation schedule and accountability from authorities responsible for the project, as they seek closure on a process that has stretched on for years.
