Residents of Bukasa, Namataba and Kito in Bweyogerere Division, Kira Municipality, are demanding compensation for land earmarked for major government projects, including Bukasa Port, the Standard Gauge Railway and the Jinja Expressway.

The affected families say they have waited for payment despite a directive they attribute to President Yoweri Museveni ordering the government to compensate them.

State Minister for Transport Julius Maganda Wandera has met the residents to discuss their concerns over the delayed payments.

During the engagement, Nelson Rwenaga, Commissioner for Transport Services and Infrastructure at the Ministry of Works and Transport, asked the residents to give the government time to engage the Chief Government Valuer over complaints that their land was undervalued.

Rwenaga said the government would engage the valuer to explore the possibility of reviewing the compensation rates.

The residents’ concerns centre on both delayed payments and the amount they have been offered for land affected by the planned infrastructure projects. However, the government has not provided a timeline for completing the compensation process.
