Mikol Philemon Sarungi is a Tanzanian government official, physician, surgeon, medical educator.

Background​

Mikol Philemon Sarungi was born on the 23rd of March 1936 in Tarime, Tanzania; the son of Sarungi Igogo Yusufu and Amimo (Maria) Sarungi.

Education​

In 1966, M. Sarungi received a degree of Doctor of Medicine from the University of Medicine, Szeged, Hungary. In 1970, he graduated from the University of Medicine with a Master of Arts degree in Surgery, Szeged, Hungary. M. Sarungi received a Diploma in orthopaedics/trauma from the University of Medicine, Vienna, 1973. Also in 1975 he graduated from the University of Shanghai with a diploma in replantation surgery.

Career​

From 1971-1973 Mikol worked as a Lecturer of surgery at the University of Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania. He held a position of a Senior lecturer at the University of Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, 1973-1976. Also M. Sarungi was an Associate professor at the University of Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania, 1977-1979 and also he was a professor, 1979, head department, 1977-1984 at the University of Dar-Es-Salaam, Tanzania. From 1984-1990 M. Sarungi worked as a Director general at Muhimbili Medical Center and at the University of Dar-Es-Salaam. Also he was a Vice chairman of the University Council, 1989-1991. Also from 1990-1992 M. Sarungi worked as a Minister of Health Government at United Republic of Tanzania, Minister of communications and transport, 1992-1993 and since 1993 he is a Minister of education and culture.

Membership​

Mikol is a member of Chama Cha Mapinduzi Ruling Political Party, since 1971. He is a Fellow of Medical Association Tanzania and Surgeons of East Africa Association.

Mikol was married to Esther Nagy Czirok on the 10th of October 1962 (divorced in April 1970). He is married to Veronica Marton on the 30th of October 1970. He has 4 children.
