President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni is scheduled to preside over the commissioning of the Yaobai Cement Uganda state-of-the-art cement and clinker factory in Moroto District, Karamoja sub-region, next week.

The event marks a significant milestone in Uganda’s ongoing industrialization efforts, particularly in the northern part of the country.

The project, valued at over USD 300 million, represents one of the largest industrial investments in Northern Uganda. It underscores growing investor confidence in the Karamoja region, which has historically faced developmental challenges but is now emerging as a hub for strategic economic initiatives.

In its Phase I, the facility boasts a production capacity of over 6,000 tonnes of clinker per day. This substantial output is projected to significantly reduce Uganda’s dependence on imported clinker by more than 2.5 million tonnes annually. By enhancing domestic manufacturing capabilities, the plant will help stabilize cement prices and better support the country’s expanding construction sector.

Beyond its direct industrial impact, the Yaobai Cement Uganda project is already contributing to socio-economic transformation in Karamoja.

It has generated employment opportunities, stimulated local enterprises, and supported improved household incomes in the region. The initiative aligns with broader government goals of regional development and inclusive growth.

The commissioning ceremony is expected to bring together regional leaders, investors, government officials, private sector representatives, and cultural institutions, highlighting a collaborative commitment to Uganda’s economic transformation agenda.

The development positions Karamoja as an increasingly viable investment destination and a key pillar in the nation’s industrialization drive.

This landmark project reflects ongoing efforts to leverage local resources—such as the significant limestone deposits in the Moroto area—for sustainable industrial growth and national self-reliance in key building materials.
