In a recent exchange highlighting Uganda's tense political climate, opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi, popularly known as Bobi Wine, suggested in a video that the country's population vastly outnumbers the army, implying that citizens could potentially overpower security forces in the event of unrest or riots.

President Yoweri Museveni responded firmly to this assertion. In a video broadcast on Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC), the national public broadcaster, Museveni addressed citizens directly, emphasizing the capabilities of the security apparatus. He stated that each security personnel is equipped with a firearm loaded with 120 bullets, urging any individuals contemplating chaos to consider this reality carefully.

Opinion

Museveni's remarks appear to frame the firepower of a single security officer as equivalent to neutralizing threats from up to 120 unarmed individuals, underscoring the disciplined and armed nature of the forces as a deterrent against disorder.

However, the president's pronounced confidence in the security institutions raises broader questions among observers and citizens alike. It prompts reflection on whether the army and police primarily serve the state and its people, or function as a personal safeguard for the long-serving leader.
