'No point riding first class': Kenyan woman shares SGR's good and bad

Days after President Uhuru Kenyatta's launch of SGR passenger services between Nairobi and Mombasa, one Rhoda Tsuma has given her review.

The President launched the rides on May 31, saying goodbye to the "lunatic train" launched a century and 22 years ago. He said hitches were expected in the first stages of operation.

Tsuma complained of lack of online booking, no directions and rude attendants.

Here is her post:

  1. No point buying a 1st class ticket. There’s no priority ticketing office and no priority check in. Everyone is huddled together like cattle irrespective of what you paid Sh700 or Sh3000.
  2. They keep time. I liked this. I am a stickler for time. Many people were left behind because they couldn’t keep time. Crying to deaf ears about traffic.
  3. They were not ready to launch. The restaurants on the station and in the train are not open yet. Carry your food and drinks from home.
  4. No priority for children or elderly. No help either.
  5. They don't take cards or M-Pesa for ticket payment. Carry cash or go to hell.
  6. No signage directions to the railway stations. One could easily get lost. Signage on the highway would help.
  7. Corruption has reared its ugly head already. Askaris at the station pre-buy tickets in bulk then sell them outside the station at a premium. I saw a Chinese family find their way through to the train without paying. They had no tickets and so the Kenyan security team told them to go buy tickets. They rudely told them off and said that they can speak Chinese to the superiors. Long story… but I was thoroughly upset about the whole scene. It looked like a movie.
  8. On Friday and Sunday, they (management) might need to have two trips from either side.
  9. Online ticketing is needed as soon as possible.
  10. Why do we have Chinese folk doing jobs Kenyans can do? Like ticketing?
  11. They should at least learn English and Swahili before doing some of those non technical jobs.
  12. Kenyans need to learn how to use public toilets. Guys are filth
  13. The views are the best one will ever experience in Kenya. The elephants in Tsavo are right at arm’s length. The flora and fauna of this country is unmatched.
  14. I think every Kenyan should try the ride. If you have relatives who cannot afford the 700, please be kind and give them a gift.
  15. The train is a good thing for this country and especially commuters who have been fleeced by bus and air companies.
  16. All the above things can be sorted out in less than a day. Looking forward to having the line go to serve our brothers and sisters in Northern Kenya , Western and Uasin Gishu areas.

Point No 10 makes me boil...ticketing should be done by LOCALS..The President and his Deputy rushing projects thru just for political gains...

The answers to those questions are right here below

Sadly but patrict is 100 % correct..Its time for Sane Kenyans to mobilize and boycott..hit them in the pockets and change will come within a day..
Kenyans are not delusional like you! They know what they talk about and when to talk about what they want to talk about
13,14,15 &16 are all postive news...

When you watch many video on you tube, visit social sites, many people who are using it are coming with bags full of praise. This one should not be taken as the ultimate review. When you are doing review report, you always take the average rating. You can't pick one review and say, that is it!!

This is why we have run down institutions in Kenya and Sub Sahara Africa because of mediocre people like ...HOW CAN A PRESIDENT AND HIS DEPUTY LAUNCH SUCH A GRAND PROJECT WITHOUT CHECKING AND MAKING SURE THAT

1 -All signage is properly in place.
2-Non technical jobs like ticketing are done by KENYANS
3- That you get what youpay for i.e. first class is first class ,ie availability of food etc...
4 All loopholes for corruption are sealed...like the police selling tickets for a commission etc...
COME ON WANJALA..THESE ARE ALL PATRIOTIC CONCERNS THAT ALL SANE KENYANS SHOULD BE ASKING
AM NOT DELUSIONAL

Let those who want to boycott do so. Hakuna MTU amelazimishwa. Sanbalata na Tobias wanajulikana

He did say during the launch in his speech that work is not yet over on the SGR and final details were going on.

I remember he said and called on Kenyans to bear with any inconvenience till when the SGR will be officially operational in January 2018.

All those concerns being raised are valid and that is the importance of piloting! The project was done so fast that not all could have been finalized but i believe, as the company will want to make profits and pay back the debt, all will be sorted out
I believe so

Kenyans are just patient and learned we know we need china hatuezi anza kiwa fukuza but as soon as we are in such a position they better be ready!!

Naswa really wants the SGR to fail. I wonder why, will it somehow appease them.

Hapo UK amempa raila kichapo cha dogi. But guess what juakali, we don't need to boycott it. We can improve it. That is what Kenyans do. We still need a light rail to connect the madaraka express at the two termini. Something kidero could not even conceive with his joho buddy.

We also need county govts to build roads to the various county stations.
That is how a country is developed. Not by empty vitendawilis. And calls for boycott.

And before I forget, its a Chinese company operating madaraka rail for the next 5years. Not sure about the employee contracting. It would be good to see my brothers and sisters handling everything about the rail, but I guess we are still in the dry run phase.
Tweeking here and there till we attain perfection.

So kua na subira kidogo. Na raila akishinda urais mnaeza kumfukuza mchina mkipenda.

And how long did it take to install all the road furniture, loong after the Thick Superhighway was completed and in use by motorists?

Give this thing time bro. Just give it time, a few short months.
I am certain that the govt has a very clear idea on how they want the railway to operate. Surely, those inconvinences were inevitable in the sgr maiden journey. It was a trial after all, what is the fuss all about?

You wish that this thing fails; for all the Jubilee programs to flop, so that u can rejoice, and use their failures to paint them as inept.

You have told off Kemzalendo above that this has nothing to do with politics, but we can see thru your intentions, Juakali. This topic is very politically angled, admit it or not. We cannot help sensing that.

You sure are insane more than delusional. Your mind shows you minor signage that just takes a day to print and install. You fail to think about how that whole project came to life from someone's mind. That whole project has taken almost 7 years from scratch. But I understand your thinking.
