Nyali MP Mohamed Ali on Friday recorded a statement with the Directorate of Criminal Investigations in Mombasa over allegations of electoral malpractices.

Police said during the August 8 poll, there were incidences that might have influenced the outcome of the election.

After being interrogated for 30 minutes, Ali said police were building a non-existent case to overturn his win.

“They will not succeed. There is no case. Someone is cooking evidence. Police are involved,” he said.

He said based on the questions, police were pushing the agenda of a prominent businessman in the county.

On September 5, Ali claimed Mombasa Governor Hassan Joho’s elder brother Abu has been coercing women and his supporters to write statements showing they were involved in electoral offences.

Ali said the aim is to craft a petition. A voter has already moved to court to challenge his win.

Ali, an independent candidate, defeated Joho’s cousin Said Abdalla of ODM with over 10,000 votes after garnering 26,000.

Abdalla beat Ali to the ODM ticket during the primaries. Ali cried foul.

Abu, through county director of communication Richard Chacha, however, denied the allegations, saying he will not engage in pettiness.

Ali said, “I find it suspect to have been summoned a month after the poll. It shows how police and their sponsors are desperately trying to build to build a non-existent case.”
