Police in Mbale City have arrested Pastor Hassan Wabutwa following the electrocution of a 19-year-old student at his rental property.

The deceased, identified as Evaline Adongo, a Senior Five student at Gill Sherlock Memorial Secondary School, reportedly died last Thursday after coming into contact with electricity while ironing clothes at a house in Namabasa Zone 3A, Doko Ward, in Mbale Industrial City Division.

Elgon regional police spokesperson Mr Rogers Taitika said Adongo died instantly. He added that a team comprising homicide detectives, scene-of-crime officers and other investigators visited and documented the scene.

According to Mr Taitika, the body had fresh burn marks on the left hand, findings consistent with electrocution.

Preliminary investigations indicate that the house, owned by Pastor Wabutwa and occupied by nine male and female students, had an illegal electricity connection.

The body was taken to Mbale City Mortuary for a postmortem examination as investigations continue.

Mr Taitika warned students, landlords and members of the public against using illegal power connections, describing them as both dangerous and unlawful. He urged landlords to ensure that their buildings are fitted with certified electrical wiring before renting them out.
