November 10, 1926: His Royal Highness Prince Leopold of Belgium wed Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Sweden at the Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels, six days after their civil wedding ceremony. The groom was the son and heir of King Albert of Belgium, the bride the daughter of Sweden’s Prince Carl, Duke of Västergötland, and his wife Princess Ingeborg of Denmark.

The religious ceremony was held at the 13th century Cathedral of St. Michael and St. Gudula in Brussels before thousands of guests. The Princess wore a wrap-style gown of white satin, embroidered with flowers and pearls. Her veil was a family heirloom of magnificent Brussels lace, anchored with a crown of myrtle.

The royal couple’s wedding party was impressive to say the least, with Princess Feodora of Denmark, Princess Marie-Jose of Belgium, Princess Martha of Sweden, and Princess Ingrid of Sweden attending the bride, while standing with the prince were Prince Carl of Sweden, Prince Gustav Adolf of Sweden, Crown Prince Olav of Norway, Count Claes Sparre, Prince Charles of Belgium, Count Folke Bernadotte, Baron Sigvard Beck-Friis, and Baron Carl Strömfelt.

Once the ceremony was complete, Princess Astrid became titled Her Royal Highness Princess Astrid of Belgium, Duchess of Brabant. The couple had three children - two sons who became Kings of Belgium themselves and a daughter who married the Grand Duke of Luxembourg. In 1934, Princess Astrid became Her Majesty The Queen of the Belgians when husband succeeded the throne as King Leopold III. Their post-accession happiness was not to last, though; the 29 year-old Queen died in a car crash in 1935.
