The Chinese government have ordered all residents of African descent to quarantine for 14 days after having 5 Nigerians tested positive for COVID19 in Guangzhou, China.
Africans are alienated from Chinese businesses and landlords, are seen as a discrimination based action within the African community. Many Africans are continuing to be caught at a of limbo, wandering on the streets with their belongings, sleeping outside in the dark, and hoping to hear from the consulates of their respective countries.
According to the South China Morning Post, the city of Guangzhou, with just 463 cases of COVID-19, has tallied 111 imported cases which led to fears of a second-wave outbreak. In which, the officials said 10 cases were found at the business location known as “Little Africa”. (5 cases found at the same restaurant)
Following the outbreak, Guangzhou officials imposed a quarantine of 14 days to African residents, regardless of their previous circumstances or how long they have been in Guangzhou. African residents’ homes will be monitored with tracking devices which signals officials if they “open the door”.
African nations have express concerns over the alleged Coronavirus-related racial discrimination happening in China. Ministers of Uganda, Kenya, Ghana and Nigeria have also speak up on this act by the Chinese government.
A letter by the African Diplomats to China’s Foreign Minister Wang Yi saying:
“The Group of African Ambassadors in Beijing immediately demands the cessation of forceful testing, quarantine and other inhuman treatments meted out to Africans.”
According to the SCMP: China has denied these allegations of racism, saying that Africans in Guangzhou are not being targeted, with foreign ministry spokesman Zhao Lijian saying that the Chinese government:
“Treats all foreign personnel in China equally, opposes any differential practices targeting specific groups of people, and has zero tolerance for discriminatory words and deeds,”
Claiming the ban was a response to local regulations, a McDonald at the Citic Plaza outlet has temporarily closed a branch in Guangzhou, China. According to source, a man had to leave McDonald with hunger and frustration after a staff handed him a notice that read:
We’ve been informed that from now on black people are not allowed to enter the restaurant. For the sake of your health consciously notify the local police for medical isolation, please understand the inconvenience caused.
