Zimbabwean literature has scored a major international achievement after Harare-based writer Simbarashe Steyn Kundizeza was named the winner of the 2026 Caine Prize for African Writing.

Kundizeza won the prestigious £10,000 prize for his short story, The Blue Fighter, which was published by The Shallow Tales Review. (The Caine Prize for African Writing)

The story follows Tinashe, a young boy whose family falls into financial hardship after his father leaves his profession to pursue his passion for building fish tanks. As the family's financial situation worsens, Tinashe's mother is forced to make difficult choices between supporting her husband's dream and securing the family's survival. The judges praised the story for its exploration of fatherhood, ambition, financial hardship and the complexities of family relationships. Chair of Judges Bola Mosuro described it as a gripping and beautifully crafted work with lasting emotional impact. (Literary Hub)

Kundizeza emerged from a five-author shortlist that represented Zimbabwe, Kenya, Cameroon, Nigeria and Egypt. The shortlist was selected from a record 407 entries submitted from 27 African countries. (Literary Hub)

The other shortlisted writers were Kenya's Gladwell Pamba for The Last Shop, Cameroon's Melara Mvogdobo for Dieu Merci!, Nigerian writer Akinwande Jordan for So Long Now It's Starting To Look Like Eternity, and Egypt's Yasmine Zohdi for The Absence of Stains. (Literary Hub)

For Kundizeza, the award marks another milestone in a growing literary career. He previously won the 2024 Island Prize for Debut African Fiction for his novel manuscript Freelance and participated in the 2025 LOATAD Black Atlantic Residency. Reflecting on the win, Kundizeza said the recognition of a story drawn from his own experiences has given him greater confidence to continue pursuing writing alongside the demands of everyday life. (Literary Hub)

The Caine Prize, established in 2000, is one of the continent's most prominent literary awards and recognises outstanding short fiction by African writers. Kundizeza's victory adds another Zimbabwean voice to the international literary stage. (The Caine Prize for African Writing)
