Nido, Lactogen Milk stock found Poisonous

The KwaZulu-Natal Department of Health has recalled two baby formulas, the Nido 1 and Lactogen 1, from supermarket and shop shelves. The Department says they have positively tested and found that the products contain a melamine substance. Melamine is a poisonous substance that has killed a number of babies in China and left about 160 babies suffering from acute kidney failure.

Spokesperson for the provincial Department, Leon Mbangwa, says though the details are still sketchy at the moment consumers are strongly advised to refrain from using these formulas. Mbangwa says they received a report from the National Department of Health instructing all environment health officials to call back Nido 1 which is produced by Nestle and Lactogen 1 from the shelves. The department’s instruction is directed at specific hospitals that received those products.

Meanwhile students at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in the Eastern Cape will now be able to conduct research about the dairy industry in the Western Cape. Provincial Agriculture Minister, Cobus Dowry, says this is part of inter-provincial agreements reached to enhance dairy research.

The country's biggest dairy herd is in the area of George in the Western Cape - where most of the research will take place. Dowry says the students’ research will also alleviate the cost of researchers.

On 17 September 2008, Health Minister Chen Zhu stated that tainted milk formula had "sickened more than 6,200 children, and that more than 1,300 others, mostly newborns, remain hospitalized with 158 suffering from acute kidney failure". By 23 September, about 54,000 children were reported to be sick and 4 had died. An additional 10,000 cases were reported from the provinces by 26 September. A World Health Organisation official said 82 percent of the children made ill were 2 years of age or below. The Hong Kong Centre for Food Safety said that 99% of victims were aged under 3 years.​

TFDA bans importation of Nido, Lactogen

The Tanzania Food and Drugs Authority (TFDA) has banned the importation, registration and consumption of Nido 1 and Lactogen1 following reports that the two baby formulas contain low traces of poisonous melamine substance.

TFDA acting executive director Charys Ugullum said yesterday that Lactogen1 with batch number 8205019l1 of July23,2008 and Nido 1 with batch number 81790181SE of June 27, 2008 imported from South Africa, have been found by the Kwa Zulu Natal\'s health department to contain the substance.

Ugullum who was addressing a press conference in Dar es Salaam, said: �It has been confirmed that a baby who drinks milk that contains melamine is likely to suffer from kidney malfunction.``

``The symptoms range from irregular urine excretion or failure to obey the call of nature, blood pressure among others,`` she added.

Melamine substance has already killed a number of babies in China and left about 160 others suffering from acute kidney failure.

She said TDFA would ensure that no more importation of the products and that the quantity already in the market do not reach consumers.

According to the official zonal and regional offices at border points as well as the district councils were investigating whether there were any such goods are in the market.

The authority has cautioned the public against buying the products with the mentioned batch numbers and business selling them.

The director said members of the public should contact regional or district health offices, TFDA zonal offices in Mwanza, Arusha and Mbeya and the headquarters at Mabibo along Mandela road in Dar es Salaam in case such products are seen in the market.

However, the TFDA official gave a clarification, saying: `` You can still buy Lactogen 1 with a different batch number, and this does not mean that even Lactogen 2 or Nido 2 also contains the chemical.``

On his part, TFDA acting Food and Security Director Justine Makisi told journalists that the authority in collaboration with other stakeholders would confiscate and destroy all the products` banned types immediately they are found in the market.

He said a full report on the findings of the search for Lactogen 1 and Nido 1 would be released next week.​
