Only 12% of Tanzanians trust what opposition MPS say

The findings were released this week by Twaweza in a research brief titled "Not to that extent? Tanzanians’ views on information and public debate." The findings are based on data collected from 1,519 respondents across mainland Tanzania, excluding Zanzibar, in November 2017.

According to the research findings, 70 per cent of Tanzanians completely trust Magufuli, 24 per cent of the population trust the president somewhat, 3 per cent are undecided and just 2 per cent distrust the head of state. This means that an overwhelming majority of the population (94 per cent) trust Magufuli completely or somewhat.

On the other hand, opposition leaders and their parties seem to suffer from a deficit of trust, with many Tanzanians harboring a sense of distrust in what they say. The study revealed that 12 per cent of the population trust opposition members of parliament completely, while 64 per cent somewhat trust them. Ten per cent of respondents are unsure if they trust or distrust opposition MPs, while 16 per cent of the population say they completely distrust opposition lawmakers.

Opposition party members and supporters have the lowest trust among the population, with just 9 per cent of respondents saying they have complete trust in them, 60 per cent trust them somewhat, while 20 per cent completely distrust them and 10 per cent are undecided.

On the other hand, ruling party MPs are seen as relatively more trustworthy compared to their opposition counterparts, with 26 per cent of the population saying they trust them completely, 59 per cent somewhat trust them and 6 per cent distrust them completely. Eight per cent of the respondents said they do know whether to trust ruling party MPs or not.

Apart from Magufuli, Prime Minister Kassim Majaliwa also enjoys huge public trust, with 64 per cent of respondents saying they have complete trust in him. However, the majority of citizens said they do not feel free to criticise the president (60%), the Vice President (54%) and the Prime Minister (51%).

Close to half also do not feel free to criticise ministers (47%), regional commissioners (46%) and district commissioners (43%).

However, huge proportions of citizens believe they should be able to criticise the government (87%) and the president for making bad decisions and not listening to advice (80%).

They believe that criticism can help stop the government from making mistakes (81%) rather than undermining respect and unity (19%). But the vast majority of Tanzanians are not supportive of using insulting language to criticise government leaders.

Upinzani haujaweza tekeleza hata moja wanalosema. We feel it.
