The National Environment Management Authority (NEMA) has halted operations at an illegal plastic recycling plant in Tororo Municipality after it was found operating without the required environmental approval.
NEMA's Eastern Region Enforcement Team shut down the facility on Thursday, August 20, following a complaint from members of the community.
According to NEMA, the plant was operating without an Environment and Social Impact Assessment (ESIA) Certificate of Approval, a key requirement for projects with potential environmental and social impacts. NEMA is mandated to assess such projects and monitor their compliance with environmental laws and approval conditions.
The enforcement action comes as the authority continues to tighten compliance among businesses and industries whose operations could pose risks to the environment and public health. NEMA says it can take enforcement measures against developers found to be operating outside environmental requirements, including issuing improvement notices and, in cases of serious and continuing breaches, stop orders.
NEMA has urged operators of recycling plants and other potentially high impact facilities to obtain the necessary environmental approvals before starting operations.
