Let’s address the issue of Tanzania’s harbor, which is reportedly being given to the UAE. Do we really believe we don’t have Tanzanians capable of running our ports? Yes, it’s true that we may not yet have the highly trained individuals to operate advanced machinery in the ports, but this should not be a reason to sell our assets to foreign powers.
A true leader, one who cares about the long-term future of Tanzania, would never lease our country’s harbor to a foreign nation. Why? Because such a decision is motivated by short-term personal gain, not national development. What could a leader who truly cares about Tanzania do instead?
First, invest in improving technical schools and universities to ensure that in 2 to 3 years, we have enough skilled Tanzanians to run the ports. While these students are still in school, the government can invest in the necessary technology for the harbor, so that when they graduate, the infrastructure is ready for them to take over. This would create employment for many young people and be far more beneficial than giving away control of our ports to foreign interests.
We could also bring in foreign instructors to train current personnel working at the harbor. But the important point here is that we have a government that seeks quick, short-term rewards, often to the benefit of foreign powers or specific elites, rather than investing in long-term solutions for the people.
