President Yoweri Museveni has urged parents to give their grown children the freedom to make independent decisions, build relationships and pursue opportunities outside their immediate communities.

Speaking during the Tooro Kingdom coronation celebrations at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal, Museveni said good parenting should not be about keeping adult children close out of fear of losing control over them.

He compared this approach to how he relates with his own adult children, saying parents should allow them to grow, make choices and find their place in society.

Museveni also extended the argument to cultural and traditional institutions, cautioning against attitudes that discourage people from moving beyond their communities.

He criticised the mentality of telling people, “You are my people; don't go far,” saying such possessiveness can limit people's opportunities to explore, build relationships and contribute to society in different ways.

His remarks came as Tooro celebrated the coronation of Omukama Edward Rukidi Nyabongo I, who succeeds the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
