President Yoweri Museveni has appointed veteran communications specialist Dennis Katungi as the substantive Deputy Executive Director of the Uganda Media Centre, ending nearly six years of acting service in the position. The appointment fills a vacancy that arose following the death of former deputy government spokesperson Col. Shaban Bantariza in 2020.
According to reports, Museveni approved Katungi's appointment through a directive dated May 30, 2026, following a recommendation from the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba. The President also instructed relevant government officials to formalize and implement the appointment.
Katungi has been serving as the Head of Communications and Media Relations at the Uganda Media Centre and had been acting as Deputy Executive Director since Bantariza's death. In his new role, he will work alongside Executive Director Alan Kasuja in coordinating and strengthening government communication.
A seasoned journalist and communications expert, Katungi previously worked with Reuters and served as New Vision's Europe correspondent, where he authored the popular "Letter from London" column. He holds a Master's Degree in Journalism from the University of East London and has extensive experience in media relations, public affairs, and strategic communications.
