Aruu County MP Christopher Komakech has called on the government to declare human trafficking a national disaster following a disturbing case involving a Ugandan graduate from Pader District who was allegedly trafficked to Thailand.

Speaking during a parliamentary session on November 3, 2026, Komakech narrated how the young man was lured to Thailand with the promise of securing admission for a Master's degree but ended up critically ill and restrained to a sickbed using dog chains and a padlock.

The MP said the victim's life was in danger and appealed to the Minister of Foreign Affairs to urgently intervene and facilitate his return to Uganda.

Komakech also revealed that 18 other Ugandans who travelled with the graduate remain unaccounted for, raising concerns about the scale of human trafficking and deceptive recruitment schemes targeting Ugandans seeking opportunities abroad.

He cited official figures showing that Uganda identified 1,272 human trafficking victims in 2025, including nearly 480 girls, arguing that the situation requires urgent national attention.

In response, Deputy Attorney General Jackson Kafuuzi told Parliament that the government would provide an update on the matter on Thursday, November 5, 2026.

The case has renewed concerns about Ugandans being lured abroad with false promises of education and employment, only to end up in exploitative and dangerous situations.
