ASWA regional police have opened investigations into the circumstances surrounding the death of a one and a half year-old -baby boy that was discovered in a pit latrine.
Police fire brigade retrieved the body of Joshua Kipa on Sunday night. The deceased is said to have been beheaded by his mother before being dumped in the latrine.
According to a source, the mother Betty Achan reportedly left Layibi Central in Gulu town where she lived with Kipa for Ogul Primary School in Paicho Sub County where she served as a teacher to resume classes but returned the same day without the boy.
"Kids at home in Layibi demanded for Kipa from Achan who was silent and this necessitated communication to Ogul to ascertain the whereabouts of the child," the source added.
He said they were shocked by the news that pieces of Kipa's clothing were found around a pit latrine near the school before later discovering the body.
Details of what likely prompted Achan, who is the prime suspect, to allegedly commit the crime are unclear.
Jimmy Patrick Okema the Aswa police spokesperson told New Vision that officers were dispatched to the crime scene immediately after being tipped off to retrieve the body.
Achan believed to be in her 30s, underwent psychological therapy from Gulu Hospital in 2014 following a mental health problem in 2013, according to family sources.
Okema also said that police have issued ‘Police Form 24' to assess her mental health before she can record a statement.
"She has not been talking and we think she may not even talk as we interrogate her," Okema said.
Meanwhile in a related incident, Gulu Central Police Station is holding two suspects in connection with the murder of a 27- year-old bodaboda rider identified as Denis Nyeko in Koro Sub County.
Kyeyune Rogers from Nakasongola was reportedly arrested from Bweyale while removing the number plate off a red Bajaj motorcycle UEB 490M that belonged to the deceased while Fred Kakooza from Luweero who also works at Life Loaf Bakery in Gulu was arrested too.
Nyeko was hit on the head and strangled to death by unknown assailants before fleeing away with his motorcycle a week ago.
Meanwhile reports from Pader district alone indicate that three people were murdered meaning Kipa and Nyeko's deaths bring the tally of murder cases in Aswa region to five in the past one week according to police.
