Vodacom Tanzania to invest TZS120bn in network upgrade
14 Jun 2012
Mobile network operator Vodacom Tanzania plans to invest more than TZS120 billion (USD76.97 million) this year in upgrading its network, the firm's managing director, Rene Meza, is quoted as saying. In a news conference this week, Mr Meza told reporters that the unit has invested TZS1.13 trillion in its networks and services since launching in 2001. ‘We have just finished a network upgrade in March this year. We are planning a further TZS120 billion investment in upgrading the network later this year,' he confirmed.
In addition, the Vodacom official confirmed that the cellco is meeting its terms and commitments with both the Tanzania Revenue Authority and the regulator, the Tanzania Communications Regulatory Authority (TCRA). Vodacom's local operating arm has to date paid TZS700 billion in taxes and anticipates contributing a further TZS139 billion in the current fiscal year.
The Tanzanian operator's South Africa-based parent, Vodacom Group, earlier reported that its unit in Tanzania increased its active subscriber base in the twelve months ended 31 March 2012, closing out the period with 9.665 million users, a market share of 40.5%.
