Residents of Mokolo East Village in Adropi Sub-county, Adjumani District, are demanding answers after the body of a four-year-old girl, Emmily Juru, was discovered in a maize garden on Monday morning following her disappearance the previous evening.
The girl reportedly went missing from her home on Sunday evening during a heavy downpour, prompting a search by family members and neighbours that continued until about 11:00 pm without success.
Her father, Samuel Mule, said she disappeared between 5:00 pm and 6:00 pm. The family was devastated when her body was discovered the following morning.
According to the village LC1 chairperson, Simon Jurugo Drikota, a resident spotted the body at around 6:39 am and immediately alerted the authorities.
Drikota said the incident was the third such killing reported in the area, with previous cases occurring last year and earlier this year. He urged residents to remain vigilant and take greater responsibility for children's safety.
Police visited the scene, cordoned off the area and deployed a sniffer dog to assist with investigations into the suspected murder.
Police detective Dominic Iranya Koma said investigators were working to establish the circumstances surrounding the girl's death. He confirmed that one person had been taken in for questioning, while more residents, including three immediate neighbours, were expected to record statements.
Koma clarified that the person being questioned was assisting with investigations and had not been identified as a perpetrator.
Police said the child's body would undergo a postmortem examination to establish the cause of death. Koma also appealed to residents to share any information that could help investigators solve the case.
He cautioned the public against taking the law into their own hands, urging residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
Police have launched a murder investigation, with further details expected after the postmortem examination.
