The Ministry of Lands, Housing, and Urban Development has raised alarm over the sale of underweight cement, warning that the practice compromises construction standards and endangers lives.
During a press conference at the Uganda Media Centre on Thursday, July 30, Dave Khayangayanga, the Director for Housing at the ministry, stated:
“It is unacceptable to Defraud Ugandans by offering cement in quantities below its actual weight.”
He emphasized that construction codes and standards are built around precise mixes, particularly the 50-kilogram benchmark for cement packaging. Any reduction below this standard, he noted, undermines the integrity of buildings and poses serious safety risks.
The ministry confirmed that investigations are being launched into firms and sellers accused of distributing underweight cement. Khayangayanga assured the public that perpetrators will be brought to justice if found guilty.
He further revealed that the ministry is working in coordination with other agencies to uncover how cement quality may be compromised before reaching consumers.
