UNBS is cracking down on underweight cement sold in Uganda. Bags labeled 50kg have reportedly been found short of that weight, sparking public complaints.
UNBS surveillance officer Hajjati Sarah Nantongo says the investigations so far point to the shortage happening at the point of sale through tampering, siphoning off cement, and illegal repackaging rather than at the certified factories themselves.
Nantongo explained that investigators found some traders collecting empty cement bags from construction sites, taking cement out of genuine bags, and re-sealing them before selling the short-weight bags to unsuspecting customers.
UNBS has now ordered cement dealers to keep verified weighing scales at their outlets so customers can check bag weight before buying.
The directive aims to close a gap in the cement supply chain, since consumers otherwise have little way to confirm whether a bag labeled 50kg actually contains that much.
