England risk clubs' anger over Wilshere and Carroll Under-21 call-up

Photograph: Michael Mayhew/Sportsphoto/Allstar Stuart Pearce could be facing a dispute with Arsenal and Liverpool over his plans to include Jack Wilshere and Andy Carroll in the England Under-21 squad that will travel to Denmark for the European Championship this summer.
    Arsenal and Liverpool are believed to be concerned about the possible inclusion of their young stars in the Under-21 squad, since both look likely to become regular fixtures in England's first team. Wilshere has endured his first full season in the Arsenal first XI and Carroll has just recovered from a groin injury.
    The Arsenal manager, Arsène Wenger, was unhappy with Pearce for selecting Theo Walcott for the same tournament in 2009 and both Premier League clubs would rather their players rest than play in a summer tournament.
    Pearce said he needed to pick "the best players available", but it is not thought that there have been any negotiations with the clubs at this point.

    Rafael van der Vaart opening the scoring on eight minutes after Wesley Sneijder set him up. The goalkeeper Gabor Kiraly could only help the Spurs midfielder's effort into the corner of his goal.
    Ibrahim Afellay should have doubled the lead in the 32nd minute but the Barcelona striker made no mistake with his second chance on the stroke of half-time.
    Robin van Persie assisted Dirk Kuyt in the 54th to make it 3-0 and then grabbed his 20th goal in 53 games for the 2010 World Cup runners-up eight minutes later.
    The Dutch, who beat the Hungarians 6-1 in a friendly before last year's World Cup in South Africa, now have 15 points from their five matches while Hungary stay second on nine. The two sides will meet again in Amsterdam on Tuesday.
    Third-placed Sweden have six points from three games, level with Moldova, who have played one more.

    Didn't see the match tonight but it looks like the Dutch are on top of their game right now. I did see their match against Sweden when they thrashed them. With Spain the Netherlands have to be favourites for Euro 2012. It is no surprised they are 2nd in the FIFA rankings. What country can play this well when they are missing Stekelenburg, Robben, van Bommel, Huntelaar? It shows the strength and depth of the pool of talent van Marwijk can draw from.

    After Van Bommel was out injured, the question of who would wear the captain's armband was resolved after days of the renowned Dutch infighting. Van der Vaart got the treasured elastic thingy (appearantly because he had the most beautiful wife). When he left the field after an hour, a fistfight broke out and Johnny Heitinga managed to cut the armband off the cold dead arm of the Tottenham man.

    Not a bad match exactly, but the Dutch hardly had to get out of first gear to win this one easily. I was somewhat surprised as I thought this was a potential slip-up for them, missing several players and playing away against a resurgent Hungary.
    I think the poor Magyars thought so too. Oh well, the return match on Tuesday ought to be a formality now, and the race is on for second place in the group.
