  • A probe into the sector shows Acacia may be exporting 111.88 metric tonnes of gold annually from its two goldmines, Buzwagi and Bulyanhulu.
  • If 50 per cent of gold ores which contain copper and silver produce 111.88 tonnes, it means Buzwagi and Bulyanhulu might be producing 223 metric tonnes of gold a year, the highest in Africa.
  • China has been the leader in annual gold production, averaging 450 metric tonnes a year, followed by Australia with the capacity of 270 metric tonnes, according to 2016 data released by the World Gold Council.
  • In Africa the only country ranked, at position nine among the top 10 gold producers is South Africa, with an annual production capacity of 140 metric tonnes.
  • But Acacia’s chief executive officer Brad Gordon said that the company’s verified data shows that the 277 containers at Dar es Salaam port contain 26,000 ounces of gold in total.
The question of how much gold mining firms are taking out of Tanzania, and whether the country is getting its fair share of revenues, continued to draw divided opinion.

This after a committee appointed by President John Magufuli released a report with shocking findings.

To critics of the mining firms the committee, which found that the actual quantities of gold in gold-copper concentrate impounded in Dar es Salaam were way more than the declared figures, vindicates them for their long-held view that the firms are plundering the country’s vast mineral resources, thanks to the contracts signed during the second, third and fourth regimes.

However, those of a contrary view question the accuracy of the data and dismiss the “unending probes” into the industry as “political drama aimed at gaining political mileage ahead of the 2020 general election.”

For almost a decade, mining is one of the key sectors that shape politics and elections, especially in Lake Zone, which is the basket of almost 50 per cent of the votes.

Tanzania’s five major gold mines are located in Lake Victoria gold belt, in the Lake Zone.

Two probe committees formed by President Magufuli so far, bring the total number of probes since 2004 to seven.

Yet, seven probes and dozens of recommendations later, the controversy is far from over.

One man says he is prepared to write the new chapter by making foreign mining firms pay Tanzania its fair share of earnings from gold.

That man is President Magufuli, who is now waiting for the second report before making what he termed last week as further major decisions that would determine the future of country’s mining sector.

Leading gold producer

If the data presented by the committee chaired by the chief executive officer of Geological Survey of Tanzania, a government-owned agency, Prof Abdul Kadir Mruma is to be believed, then Tanzania could as well be among the leading gold producers in the world.

The committee established that each container of the 227 carried a minimum of 28.1 kilogrammes of gold. This makes a total of 7,800kg (7.8 tonnes) of gold. Acacia produces and exports an average of 4,000 containers a year, or 333 containers each month.

From the committee’s findings, it would mean Acacia exports 111.88 metric tonnes of gold annually from its two goldmines, Buzwagi and Bulyanhulu, located in Kahama Town, in the Lake Victoria gold belt.

In geological terms, this is equivalent to 1,500,000 ounces of gold valued at $1.89 billion a year, according to the current market price, which averages $1,260 per ounce.

Just how much gold does Tanzania have?

Political families own half of private wealth

POSTED 20/2/2014

People with political connections control more than 50 per cent of the Kenya’s wealth that is owned by individuals, a new report has shown.

Highlighting this as one of the factors that could negatively impact on Kenya economic growth in future, the Wealth in Kenya 2014 report says that a common thread running through almost all the dollar millionaires is their political connections as well as their ownership of large tracts of land.

The list of the wealthy political dynasties and billionaire landowners reflects Kenya’s top political leadership.

However, the report does not give details about how their wealth was acquired and does not suggest in any way that the wealth was acquired irregularly.

The Kenyatta, Moi, Kibaki, Karume, Kulei, Biwott, Nyachae, Odinga, Saitoti, Michuki and Mwau families are listed among the wealthiest in the report compiled by a British organisation. The same families also own large tracks of land.

Other large individual land owners include Mr Swaleh Nguru, Mr Saleh Said Sherman, Mr Tahir Sheikh Said (TSS) and Kamlesh Pattni.
The group is likely to get even richer because property prices continue to rise.

I am one of the harshest critics of our news media industry... they are so emotive and very lazy. When they say people with political connections, yet govt is the biggest spender in Kenya. My advise read business news and sports news alone, politics you can but the headline is just enough, the amount of bs in our papers annoys me. Even the businesss and sports news you have to be careful because the journalists don't do anything. They probably copy paste each other. Na kwa tv wanasema tu allegedly, to cover their ass.

The aristocratic class that owns huge tracts of land in Kenya
  • Published on June 26, 2016
Laikipia Plateau, estimated to be about 10,000 sq km or 2.5 million acres, has the biggest number of white landowners. It stretches from Mt Kenya in the east to the Rift Valley in the west. The Laikipia Maasai, who number approximately 35,000, are squashed on different patches of land, which measure about 1100 sq km or an equivalent of 281,587 acres of land.

On the other hand, foreigners comprising mostly the British and American "aristocratic" class and a few influential local politically well-connected barons, occupy thousands of acres of land on an individual basis. Only 20 own 74 per cent of the total land in the Laikipia District. In the Laikipia Plateau, private ranches range from "small" concerns of 5,000 acres to endless horizons of massive land properties that are over 100,000 acres. There are approximately 36 estates. Two of the 18 estates are owned by multi-millionaire Hollywood A-list types who entertain tourist guests. Many of the private farms and ranches are today being converted to wildlife sanctuaries.

Ol Ari Nyiro Ranch

Italian Baroness and socialite, Kuki Gallman, who owns 100,000 acres (L/R No. 8049), is one of the big landowners in the district. It is known as Ol Ari Nyiro Ranch or Laikipia Ranch (Ol Ari Nyiro in the Maasai language means the place of dark waters). Kuki and her second husband Paolo Gallman bought the ranch in 1974. After the death of Paolo and her son Emmanuel in 1980 and 1983 respectively, Kuki transformed the property into a reserve, providing a wildlife sanctuary in 1984. Her husband was killed in a car accident, while transporting a cot for their unborn baby. Three years later, tragedy struck again and Kuki’s 17-year-old son was killed by a poisonous snake as he tried to extract venom from it.

At one time, Ol Ari Nyiro Ranch used to have the largest available number of wildlife, including the endangered species of black rhino and the rare beautiful Grevy Zebra. Out of the 100,000 acres, 2,000 have been set aside for leasing to sedentary individuals who use the land for cultivation.

Ol Pejeta Ranch

After Kuki’s "little country", the other huge chunk of land is the Ol-Pejeta Ranch, a 92,000-acre private concern that was formerly owned by the LONRHO Group. Located between Mt Kenya and the Aberdare Ranges, the Ol-Pejeta also straddles the Equator. The largest chunk of the land – 63,000 acres — has been left to rearing of cattle and sheep. There are 8,000 head of cattle that have been split into 86 huge paddocks and 4,000 sheep.

Game sanctuary

Another 24,000 acres have been preserved as a game sanctuary called the Sweet Waters Game Reserve. In essence, the ranch just leaves a paltry "3,590" acres to be leased (with agreement) for wheat farming. Originally part of the Maasai homeland, it was acquired by Lord Delamere in the early part of the 20th century and his partner Marcus Wickham Byanton.

Ol-Pejeta has interesting and chequered history. After Lord Delamere’s ownership, the ranch was acquired by Christina Onassis’ father-in-law, Henri Roussel. The Roussel family comes from the French bourgeoisie class that has huge investments in the pharmaceutical industry. His son, Thierry, was married to Christina, until she died in 1988. The late Christina was the only daughter of the late Greek shipping magnate, Aristotle Onassis, one time the richest man in the world.

But it is Adnan Khashoggi, the Saudi-born international "playboy" and former billionaire arms dealer, who transformed the ranch into an entertainment arena, giving it notorious prominence. In his heyday, Khashoggi used the ranch as his hideaway and getaway from international business deals.

Ol Pejeta ranch is registered as nine pieces — possibly because of changing ownership and because of gradually growing in size over the years. They are Nos. 10323, 10068 (whose original number was 5116/2), 6301/2, 5160/2, 2618/2, 2582, 2564, 6367 and 2561.

Rights groups put Kenya govt on the spot over rising attacks on journalists

The media in Kenya is increasingly finding it difficult to conduct its operations due to rising threats from government.

A new report written jointly by the Human Rights Watch and Article 19, which monitors threats to free expression across the globe notes that Kenyan authorities have committed a range of abuses against journalists reporting on sensitive issues.

The groups note that threats against journalists have increased to levels not seen in the past decade, a factor that is critical at a time the country is preparing for general elections slated for August.

“Journalists and bloggers reporting on corruption, disputed land acquisitions, counterterrorism operations and the 2007-2008 post-electoral violence, among other sensitive issues, have faced intimidation, beatings, and job losses,” the report notes.

Abuses

Titled Not Worth The Risk: Threats To Free Expression Ahead of Kenya’s 2017 Elections, the 53-page report catalogues abuses by government officials, police, county governors and government officials against the media.

“For Kenya’s August elections to be credible and fair, the media needs to be able to report on pressing issues of national interest without fear of reprisals, ”said Otsieno Namwaya, Africa researcher at Human Rights Watch. "President Uhuru Kenyatta should publicly underscore the importance of free expression and condemn threats and attacks on journalists and bloggers."

Investigations were conducted over a period of four months involving interviews with 92 journalists, human rights activists, bloggers and government officials in Kenya.

The groups list 17 incidents in which 23 journalists and bloggers were physically assaulted between 2013 and 2017 by government officials or their allies.

At least two journalists have died under circumstances that may have been related to their work.

Death threats

The groups also documented 16 incidents of direct death threats against journalists and bloggers across the country in recent years, and cases in which police arbitrarily arrested, detained and later released without charge at least 14 journalists and bloggers.

For example on September 7, 2016, unidentified assailants forced themselves into the house of a photojournalist, Denis Otieno in the town of Kitale in Kenya's Rift Valley and demanded photos on his camera, then shot him dead.

Mr Otieno had photographed police officers shooting and killing a motorcycle taxi rider at a Kitale bus station days earlier.

A family member said that before his murder, Mr Otieno had expressed alarm about death threats.

No one has been arrested in relation to his killing.

“We must stem the tide of increased violence and impunity against journalists in Kenya. No policy to address the situation can be successful if measures to prevent aggression against and to protect journalists are not accompanied with thorough and timely prosecutions of all crimes committed against them,” said Henry Maina, regional director at Article 19 Eastern Africa.

I normally ignore those copy pasting stuffs, most of these guys can't debate efficiently and will seek attention by copy pasting every dirt out there. The best thing is to ignore and continue. For me unless someone proves their ability to debate, anything they tag in here is null and void.
If it's about copy pasting dirt of every country, then there is not one single nation that can remain standing because even in America there are street families.
So always ignore and move on to discussing with those intelligent enough to debate.

Ninawashauri Kenya waachane na outdated Mchina's train system just becasuse its free for now. (They must be sure that in the end they will have to pay for the loan)... Nimesikia jinsi hiyo train invayoenda utadhani fundi karai wanagonga nyundo. Yani ukitoka Mombasa mpaka ufike Nairobi, kichwa lazima kiume, au la sivyo ubebe Panadol!
Hiyo railway in the worst case scenario inafaa kuwa reli ya kubeba mizigo, not passengers!
