The woman who was with Afrigo Band singer Moses Matovu shortly before he died will not face criminal charges, the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Lino Angunzu, has said. Instead, Rose Tumusiime is expected to be a key prosecution witness in the case against Vincent Arnold Nsamba, alias Sitenda, who is accused of assaulting Matovu.

What the DPP said

  • Tumusiime was brought to Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court on September 28 when Nsamba appeared to answer charges related to Matovu's death.
  • However, she was not charged and was taken away from the court, leading to speculation that she was also a suspect.
  • DPP Angunzu said police had mistakenly brought her along while taking Nsamba to court.
  • He said the prosecution had determined that Tumusiime is not a suspect and will instead rely on her as a witness.
  • Angunzu added that if she is being kept at an undisclosed location, it could be for her protection.

Prosecution alleges that in the early hours of September 24, Nsamba went to a house where he found Tumusiime with Matovu. Nsamba was reportedly in a relationship with Tumusiime and was paying for the house where she lived.

According to the allegations:
  • Tumusiime initially refused to open the door after Nsamba knocked, prompting him to allegedly bang on the windows and break the glass.
  • When Tumusiime and Matovu eventually left the house, Nsamba allegedly confronted and attacked the woman.
  • Matovu reportedly intervened, after which Nsamba allegedly punched him, causing him to fall.
  • Matovu was rushed to Kibuli Hospital but was pronounced dead.
Nsamba reportedly admitted to investigators that he punched Matovu but denied intending to kill him. He was later charged and remanded to Luzira Prison. His case will return to court on November 3.
