A 38-year-old man has died after sustaining serious injuries during a violent confrontation at his in-laws' home in Pallisa District, where he had reportedly gone to reconcile with his estranged wife.
The deceased, identified as Charles Faustine Okonye, a resident of Kadoki Village in Akadot Parish, was involved in a fight that police say stemmed from a love triangle involving his wife, Rose Apio, and another man believed to be her lover.
According to preliminary investigations, Okonye visited his in-laws' home on Saturday in an attempt to resolve marital disagreements with Apio, who had returned to her parents' home following domestic disputes. After discussions between the families, the couple was allowed to spend the night together in a separate room.
However, the situation reportedly took a dramatic turn later that night when another man allegedly arrived at the home looking for Apio. Witnesses say a confrontation broke out between the two men, with each claiming a relationship with the woman. The argument quickly escalated into a physical fight.
During the altercation, Okonye sustained severe injuries. Family members and residents rushed to intervene and later took him to a nearby health facility before he was referred to Mbale Regional Referral Hospital for specialized treatment.
Despite efforts by medical personnel, Okonye succumbed to his injuries while receiving treatment.
Police have since launched investigations into the incident and are working to establish the exact circumstances that led to the fatal fight.
Authorities have also begun recording statements from witnesses and family members as part of the ongoing inquiry.
The incident has shocked residents of the area, with local leaders urging couples to seek peaceful means of resolving domestic conflicts before disagreements escalate into violence.
