The street battles broke out around the parliament buildings on Sunday following a rally against the president.

Many activists have held peaceful demonstrations. People gathered in front of the European Union delegation in Kiev on Monday calling for sanctions to be imposed on Ukraine's government.

The unrest follows weeks of mainly peaceful action against Kiev's decision to spurn a political agreement with the EU.
