Lawyers March to DPP Offices Over Lukwago Charges

Members of the legal fraternity, led by the Uganda Law Society (ULS), marched to the offices of the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) on Thursday to protest the charging of former Kampala Lord Mayor and senior lawyer Erias Lukwago with misprision of treason. The lawyers demanded the immediate withdrawal of what they described as politically motivated charges.

The protest follows Lukwago's arrest earlier this week by security operatives and his subsequent appearance before Makindye Chief Magistrate's Court, where he was formally charged and remanded to Luzira Prison. Prosecutors allege that he concealed information relating to an alleged treason plot.

The Uganda Law Society argues that prosecuting a lawyer involved in defending opposition figures threatens the independence of the legal profession and undermines the right to legal representation. ULS President Isaac Ssemakadde has warned that lawyers across the country could embark on industrial action if the charges are not withdrawn.

The controversy stems from Lukwago's role as lead counsel for opposition politician Kizza Besigye in ongoing legal proceedings. His arrest drew condemnation from opposition leaders and legal bodies, who described it as an attack on the rule of law.​
