Thirty-four primary school head teachers in Lamwo district have been demoted to classroom teaching roles following poor performance in the 2025 Primary Leaving Examinations (PLE).

The decision, announced by the district performance review committee, will take effect when schools reopen for the second term of the 2026 academic year.

District LC5 chairperson, Sisto Oyet Ocen, said the move was necessary to restore academic standards in government schools. He emphasized that poor performance would no longer be tolerated, noting that administrators who fail to deliver must give way to others capable of improving learning outcomes.

The 2025 PLE results revealed worrying trends in Lamwo district:

• Out of 3,142 registered pupils, only 28 candidates scored Division One.
• 939 candidates passed in Division Two, 1,004 in Division Three, and 520 in Division Four.
• 606 pupils were ungraded, while 45 candidates did not sit the examinations.

These figures prompted the district to take immediate action, with deputy head teachers directed to assume leadership responsibilities in the affected schools.

Lamwo district currently has 73 government primary schools and 11 secondary schools. The demotion of head teachers is part of a wider effort to strengthen accountability and improve learning outcomes across the district.

Ocen stressed that the district’s priority is to ensure pupils receive quality education, and that leadership positions will be reserved for those who demonstrate the ability to raise academic performance.

this is not a good decision, these teachers are not to blame for the poor performance, it starts with government, it does not schools in ruaral areas to maximum, it does not even pay teachers, why demot them yet government doesnt take on their role
