In this article we are going to discuss about one of effective leadership styles used by managers and leaders to lead their teams known as laissez-faire leadership style. Whereby, we will look on its meaning, characteristics, pros, cons and the situation to which this style is more effective.
What is laissez-faire leadership?
The word "laissez-faire" is originated to french language which literary means "let people do as they choose".
By definition, laissez-faire leadership style is a leadership approach in which team members are free to make decisions and solve problems on their own without being interfered by their leader or without any input from their leader. This style of leadership is also known as delegative or hands-off leadership style. The opposite of laissez-faire leadership is micromanagement leadership which characterised by excessive supervision whereby a leader oversees every tiny detail of work.
The laissez-faire leaders give their team members full control of the job or task without interfering them. They provide their teams with the guidance on how to perform the tasks and resources required to accomplish those tasks then leave their teams to perform those tasks on their own. However, leaders can be there when their teams need support from them.
This leadership style can work effectively to teams with ability to work independently (without supervision) for example experienced and skilled teams.
Characteristics of laissez-faire leadership style
The characteristics of laissez-faire leadership include;
1. Hands-off approach:
In laissez-faire leadership the leaders leave almost everything to be done by team members without supervising them.
2. High level of trust:
This style of leadership builds high level of trust between a leader and the team members.
3. Team members make decisions:
Laissez-faire leaders give their team members an authority to make decisions and solve problems on their own.
4. Provision of training & support:
In laissez-faire leadership, training, guidance and support are highly required since team members work independently without supervision.
Advantages of laissez-faire leadership
The following are the pros of laissez-faire leadership style.
1. It develops problem-solving and decision-making skills:
Since team members work independently and are allowed to make decisions and solve problems on their own, it can develop problem-solving and decision-making skills into them.
2. It encourages creativity:
Laissez-faire leadership fosters environment that encourages creativity since team members are free to find out new ideas and new methods of performing their tasks.
3. It builds confidence:
The leaders let their team members to perform tasks without supervision and giving them authority to make decision and solve problems on their own, this can build confidence to team members.
4. Develop leadership skills:
Laissez-faire leaders delegate some leadership roles to their teams including making decisions and solving problems, this can help to develop leadership skills to the team members.
Disadvantages of laissez-faire leadership
Below are the cons of Laissez-faire leadership style.
1. It is not effective to self-motivated and unskilled teams:
Laissez-faire leadership can't work effectively to teams that are not enough skilled, experienced and self-motivated.
2. It may lead to ambiguity:
This leadership style can also confuse the team members about their roles in case a leader provides them with little guidance or not provide it at all.
When does laissez-faire leadership style work effective?
A laissez-faire leadership style can be more effective when applied to teams with skills and knowledge of performing a given task, experience of a given task but also passion for that task.
