U.S. says Assad must go, timing down to negotiation

LONDON (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said on Saturday Syria’s President Bashar al-Assad has to go

Ian Bremmer: "Assad Has Won" In Syria; Interesting Thing Is Trump Waited Two Years

CBS News senior global affairs contributor and Eurasia Group president Ian Bremmer joins "CBS This Morning" to discuss President Trump's decision to withdraw all U.S. ground troops from Syria.

Bremmer said the U.S. withdrawal will not create a vacuum but will instead empower Syrian President Bashar al Assad.

"Assad has won," he said. "Obama said Assad must go. Obama is gone, Assad is still there. It is embarrassing to admit that Assad has won, but five million Syrian refugees and 500,000 dead Syrians from the war already know that."

"So the fact that we're cutting and running -- it wasn't as if the U.S. had the leverage on the ground. That was the Russians, Iranians, and Turks. Those were the countries that were willing to commit a lot because Syria mattered as a high priority of foreign policy to those countries. For the U.S., it did not," he said. "For someone like President Trump, who has been saying I want to get those guys out. The interesting thing is he waited for two years, obviously Mattis and others have a lot less influence today than they did before. But it is not that this is such a surprise."

In a lighthearted exchange, Russian President Vladimir Putin recently suggested to Syrian President Bashar Assad that he invite US President Donald Trump to visit him in Damascus. The Syrian dictator signaled he was prepared to go ahead with the idea.
In video that emerged of banter between the two leaders during Putin’s visit last week to Syria, the Russian leader is heard saying he would pass on the message to Trump.

John Kerry admits US was disturbed by build up of Russian military in Syria

The West seeks a middle way between Assad and Isis, but experts say Putin is right to back the Damascus regime
John Kerry, the US Secretary of State, has admitted that his country was “disturbed” by Russia’s military build-up in Syria. The movement of Russian fighter jets and other weaponry, including ground-to-air missiles, to Syria could pose a threat to American and allied military forces, he said.

US officials say Russia moved a small number of fighter jets to a base in Syria on Friday, hours after the US Defense Secretary, Ashton Carter, talked with Russia’s defence minister, Sergei Shoygu, in the first military contacts between the two countries in some time.

“Clearly, the presence of aircraft with air-to-air combat capacity ... and surface-to-air missiles raises serious questions,” Mr Kerry said
