More by this Author Each of the 16 teams in the Kenyan Premier League is set to receive 20 new hand stitched, latex laminated and FIFA-approved balls for use in the ongoing 2014 season.

The balls branded ‘The Puma KPL King Match’ were launched Tuesday and will be supplied by German football makers PUMA.

Speaking during the launch, PUMA Middle East Managing Director Oliver Wirth said the company seeks to maintain its long standing history with African football.

“We treasure the responsibility we have been given for the East African market, and Kenya is our top priority. The official ball launch is our first activation here since we were given responsibility for the East African market in 2012,” said Wirth.

The 500 balls will be used only during national league matches and training sessions, and are identical in all features including weight, size and colour.

FOUR-YEAR-SPONSORSHIP

Puma have been the official ball sponsors for the top tier league since 2012 when they first signed the four-year partnership with KPL, but the deal covers neither the lower tier clubs, nor the national football team, Harambee Stars.

On this, KPL chairman Ambrose Rachier called on the sponsors to consider spreading their reach beyond the national league.

“This sponsorship has greatly helped in cutting costs for the KPL clubs, but it would even be better if the assistance could trickle down to the other leagues such as the National Super League where there is a lot of action as well, and the teams need even more help,” he said.

Mr Wirth said that the ball sponsorship is just the first initiative in the East African region, and that there is room for extending their gestures to higher levels.

“The official ball launch is our first activation here in East Africa, and we will do our best to find ways of including more entities going forward,” he said.

NO MONETARY GAIN

KPL CEO Jack Oguda said that just like in the past two years, there was no monetary mention on the contract.

“The partnership with Puma is mainly for standardisation of the league matches and there is no money involved. Puma will provide us with 500 balls, 20 of which go to each club and the rest are used during matches,” he said.

Puma have an extensive history with African football, and join the likes of GOtv, Tusker and SuperSport who offer financial assistance to the KPL.
