King David Junior School will remain closed for about two weeks as it focuses on the emotional recovery of learners and staff following the Kapchorwa road crash that claimed 24 lives, including the school's director, Tadeo Ssekadde.
Headteacher Ssalongo Stanley Musagala said the school is gradually recovering as injured pupils continue to receive treatment, with some already discharged and reunited with their families.
"The situation is gradually returning to normal. Those who lost their lives have been laid to rest by their families, while those who were hospitalised are recovering, with some being discharged depending on their condition," Musagala said.
The school will hold a memorial Mass for the victims, while teachers have been assigned to visit bereaved families to offer condolences and psychosocial support. Counsellors will also work with learners through guided sessions and activities aimed at helping them overcome trauma before classes resume.
The crash occurred at Kaserem along the Kapchorwa–Mbale Road as learners returned from an educational tour. The death toll later rose to 24 after three pupils died while receiving treatment.
Following the tragedy, the government indefinitely suspended all school study tours nationwide and announced new measures to strengthen road safety for school transport. The Ministries of Education and Sports, Works and Transport, together with the Uganda Police Force, are reviewing and tightening regulations to better protect learners during school travel.
