The presence of the military within the country’s troubled North-Eastern region has been enhanced, following the inauguration of Modika Barracks, one of the infantry formations in the Kenya Army.

The camp is based in Garissa County, a hot spot for terror activities launched by Somalia based Al-Shabaab militants.

It’s a second camp within the boarder county and will be the headquarters to the 6th Brigade, which is made up of three units -17, 21 and Kenya Rifles.

Military officials said the new barracks will be home to three army fighting units and three support sub-units, as part of a program to modernise and improve the capability of the Kenya Defence Forces.

The unit’s official colour is purple accorded to them in 2018.

Speaking during the launch of the new barracks, President Uhuru Kenyatta said the location of the camp is part of the Kenya Army strategic plan to enhance its presence within the region.

“The Kenya Army will continue to adapt to the ever-changing threat environment by broadening its skills, technological and capability portfolio,” the President said and committed to provide more resources to the Kenya Army as they seek to extend their footprint in the region and the entire country.

The brigade’s primary mission is protecting the country against external land-based aggression.

“It takes sacrifice and discipline to protect a nation. I want to remind Kenyans that defence and security of our country is a collective responsibility and we should remain vigilant and united against those who may want to wish us harm,” said the President when he addressed soldiers at the Modika Barracks in the outskirts of Garissa town.

At the same event, President Kenyatta launched the Soldier’s Legend, a book documenting the 55-year history of the Kenya Army and the soldiers who have always stood at the frontline to defend Kenya.

The new Barracks is strategically located within Garissa, which has over time fallen victim of terror-related attacks.

With the establishment of the army camp, the country’s ability to respond to security challenges has been boosted.

The county is the home to Garissa University, where 147 students were killed in 2015, in one of the worst terror attacks in the country.

The Chief of Defence Forces General Samson Mwathethe and Commander Kenya Army Lt Gen WR Koipaton and 6 Brigade Commander Brig P K Njema spoke at the launch of the new Barracks.

Lt Gen Koipaton said the Soldier’s Legacy will help demystify the Kenya Army and will be useful to students, scholars and Kenyans in general.

He said the establishment of the new barracks is part of efforts to modernise the KDF as it changes to adapt to emerging threats.

Lt Gen Koipaton said new permanent military bases like Modika will also be established in other regions of the country to improve the capacity of KDF.
