According to reports, endemic aflatoxin contamination affects important staple crops including maize, peanuts, and dairy products, primarily in the eastern area of Kenya, posing a serious threat to food safety.

At the Cereals Millers Association's (CMA) annual Technical Conference and Expo 2026, the aflatoxin crisis was a major topic of discussion. The two-day event, which took place at the Sarit Expo Center in Nairobi, brought together millers and more than 70 businesses, including those who provide aflatoxin treatments.

Exhibitors saw it as a catastrophe that needs to be addressed, but one business, Aflabox Srl, developed the first aflatoxin treatment in Africa in Kenya. The business created Aflabox, a device that scans and provides real-time aflatoxin testing from the ground using artificial intelligence.

According to Paloma Fernandes, CEO of the Cereal Millers Association (CMA), aflatoxin has been a major issue in Kenya for a long time, and efforts are on to find a solution. The most notable of these initiatives is the Italian business Aflabox's invention, which has solved the problem.

The CEO of CMA stated at the Annual Technical Conference and Expo 2026 that data from 2012 revealed that 65% of commercial flour on retail shelves had aflatoxin contamination.

She acknowledged that there were some aflatoxin cases in 2020 that may be fatal right away, but she also emphasized that efforts have been made to address it.

According to Fernandes, they were thrilled to see new advancements in aflatoxin testing and fortification at this year's conference.
