DRC Accuses Kenya and Somalia of Deploying Troops to Support M23
The Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has accused Kenya and Somalia of deploying troops to fight alongside M23 rebels in South Kivu, escalating diplomatic tensions in the region.
According to a statement issued by the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC), the alleged foreign troops are operating alongside M23 fighters in parts of South Kivu. However, the statement did not provide publicly verifiable evidence to support the claims.
Kenya has consistently denied supporting the M23 rebel group, maintaining that its role in the conflict has been to promote peace through regional mediation efforts. Nairobi has previously stated that it remains a neutral party and has no military involvement in support of the rebels.
Relations between Kenya and the DRC were strained in late 2023 after Congolese opposition leaders and M23 representatives launched a political alliance in Nairobi, prompting Kinshasa to recall its ambassador from Kenya.
Somalia has not issued an official response to the allegations.
The conflict in eastern DRC has displaced millions of people and remains one of Africa's longest-running security crises. As of now, the allegations by the DRC have not been independently verified, while Kenya continues to reject the accusations.
