Despite large - to the most part still untapped - geothermal resources, Kenya is seeking to build up capacity for a nuclear power plant to feed its future enertyg mix.

Despite large untapped geothermal potential, Kenya is looking into nuclear power for its future power supply, as reported this week from the country.

The four countries of Russia, China, South Korea and Slovakia have signed an MOU that could see them in assisting Kenya to build up capacity for a nuclear power plant, estimated to cost Sh 500 billion ($4.8 billion) with a possible start of construction in 2022.

“We want to make sure that we have the right human resource capacity, public awareness and proper regulations to enable us smoothly adopt this energy source. That is why we are investing in informative studies and benchmarking to ensure that there is proper stakeholder engagements and extensive consultations in this field,” said Kenya Nuclear Electricity Board (KNEB) acting chief executive Collins Juma on Tuesday.

The agreement was signed during the opening of the Kenya Nuclear Energy Week and Conference at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre in Nairobi.

The summit, which concludes tomorrow, will see various stakeholders deliberate the country’s preparedness to venture into nuclear energy generation, the concerns, risks and benefits.

With large geothermal potential still untouched, it seems unclear why Kenya would seek to add nuclear power to its future power generation mix. With sourcing cost of necessary uranium and the unclear costs of waste disposal for the future, and the availability of geothermal energy make this an odd choice for the country. With an estimated $4.8 billion investment cost for the nuclear power plant, it is in cost also not cheaper – if not even more expensive – than geothermal power plants to be built.
Nimesoma article hii leo...my take is that even though we would want to enter a new era of nuclear energy, it would make alot more sense to exploit our untapped geothermal energy potential instead (which stands at a mind-boggling 10000MW).

Kenya's untapped geothermal energy more than enough to power entire nation
Among the countries in Africa with the potential to become an economic powerhouse, Kenya's vast geothermal energy - which located near a hotbed of volcanic activity called "The Great Rift," has more than enough power to light up the entire nation, and then some.

Near the town of Naivasha, KenGen Drilling Superintendent Isaac Kirimi declares the starkness of a nearby landscape. "This is like a live volcano! You can easily convince someone you're in hell," he said. KenGen is Kenya's leading power company.

Kirimi notes that the surrounding rocks underfoot are still soft. He's in search of a small bushy plant known as geothermal grass, which thrives in high ground temperatures.

"It is normally used by scientists to give them an indication of where there is potential for geothermal resources," Kirimi says. "A scientist is like a wild person. You are imagining things and now trying to transfer that imagination. And try to convince someone to invest in that is not very easy."

More than 30 years after KenGen built its first geothermal plant here, investment in renewable energy is booming. Aided by government support, KenGen is ramping up geothermal production.

i beg to differ.....acha wajenge tu.uwa naona hizi story ndio hua zinaturegesha nyuma

Na kama tunataka kuwa industrialised 10GW ya geo si enough....we will still need more

SA consumes 45GW
Spain is at 60GW

Kenya tuko 2.7GW
Germany is at 103GW

By 2030 Kenya wants 19GW

by 2063 Kenya wants 60GW

bado nuclear hata tukilenga the next decade we will still eventually build a nuclear power plant

Na ww unajua maana ya investment ni nn?? Mbona wajiaibisha smh!!

NucleAr is more stable

Ati more stable, sane countries zinaachana na hiyo kitu, insane countries ndio munaikimbilia, mfano Germany, Japan etc, and more debate are taking place now concerning Nuclear pros and cons and what ought to be done for a safer planet.

NucleAr is more stable
I don't think so, do know the cost of dealing with nuclear disaster? Germany wana phaseout all there nuclear power plants, in favor of renewable, Japan they're thinking out it. You'll still have to import nuclear fuel (or nuclear rod) which are very expensive. And its only a handful number of countries which can supply you with fuel rods. Waste is another expensive thing, the cost of retreat the nuclear waste is as higher as the cost of buying new fuel. African should focus on renewable energy, we should be the champion natural power generation just as we did with money transfer. As we're least developed continent, it gives us a space to play around with new ideas.

Now clap

ungeeleza ivi kidogo tungekuelewa unataka kusema nini..we umekuja na ya mazingira

Exactly, our proven geothermal capacity is not enough. We need clean power to power our industrialization program. "Green" resources and nuclear energy facilities are not mutually exclusive. Let us not be timid!
