President William Ruto has held high-level talks with visiting United States lawmakers in Nairobi, focusing on strengthening trade and security cooperation between the two countries, with particular attention on the future of the African Growth and Opportunity Act (AGOA).

The meeting underscored Kenya’s push to secure continued access to the US market under AGOA, a key trade framework that allows eligible African countries to export goods duty-free. The programme has been instrumental in supporting Kenya’s textile, agricultural, and manufacturing sectors, but its long-term future remains uncertain.

During the discussions, President Ruto emphasized the importance of extending AGOA and exploring a more stable, long-term bilateral trade agreement with the United States. Kenya has been actively engaging Washington to secure better trade terms and expand export opportunities, especially as global trade dynamics continue to shift.

Beyond trade, the talks also addressed regional and global security issues, reflecting Kenya’s growing role as a strategic ally of the United States in Africa. Both sides highlighted cooperation in peacekeeping, counterterrorism, and regional stability, particularly in conflict-prone areas within the Horn of Africa.

The engagement comes at a critical time, as African countries push for certainty around AGOA, which has historically provided significant economic benefits but faces policy and political uncertainties in the US. Analysts have warned that while extensions offer temporary relief, a long-term framework is necessary to ensure sustainable trade relations.

Kenya is also pursuing broader economic partnerships globally, positioning itself as a key trade hub while balancing relationships with major powers, including the United States and China.

The Nairobi talks signal a continued effort by both countries to deepen diplomatic and economic ties, with Kenya seeking to secure its export markets and strengthen its role in regional security and international trade.
