Inaugurated on 12 December 1964 the Kenya Navy was established in Kenya as the marine branch of the Kenya Defence Forces and has continued to protect the country from any enemy who might try invading the country through its water bodies.
The Kenya Navy which has its headquarters in Mombasa County also has other bases at Shimoni, Msambweni, Malindi, Kilifi and Manda which was established in 1995. The Mtongwe base is the Kenya Navy’s logistics base and its oldest establishment.
Operations conducted by the Kenya Navy are often not on the lime light as compared to other arms but in September 2012, the Kenya Navy’s operation in Kismayo, Somalia against the Al Shabaab militia groups made headlines following their victory in paving way for the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF).
The operation could not be a success without the Kenya Navy Fleet vessels. Some of these fleet vessels were used during the operation but others are often used during other peace keeping missions.
The Kenya Navy began its journey with one ship but as of 2015, the Kenya Navy fleet has acquired more fleets which can accommodate more service men, equipments and ability to navigate through the deep seas.
One of Kenya Navy Fleet acquisition which the Kenya Chief of Defense Forces, Gen. Julius Karangi referred to as Jasiri P3124 arrived at the country’s coast with greater abilities as compared to other fleets.
This is the flagship of the Kenya Navy. It is designed to undertake several roles such as anti-surface warfare roles, anti-air warfare roles; it can also be engaged in shipping warfare forces from sea to land and vice versa.
The ship can also provide gun fire support and show bombardments on selected points from the sea to land.
This vessel can attack an enemy without their ability to notice it. According to Brig Charles Kahariri, Kenya Navy Deputy Commander/ Fleet Commander, the maritime force has been well trained to use this vessel in its operations while protecting the country from any invasion.
The Kenya Navy fleet vessel, Jasiri is well built to provide maritime security against any possible threat from the water body.
Kenya Navy celebrated her achievements over 50 years in 2014. Their ability to defend what belongs to Kenya from its water body still goes on as Kenya’s fight against terrorism continues.
