Attention all Kenyan Dog lovers and breeding kennels, the annual Kenya police dog auction(In Langata ) has been postponed. This gives you time to prepare your wallet and vocal chords for this annual auction that is also a good family event. This year 18 highly trained and battle ready dogs from two categories will be on auction.

1) Protection Guard Dogs: German shepherds (starting from kshs 5,000), Rottweilers (starting from ksh 8,000), Boerboel (starting from ksh 10,000) and Labradors (starting from kshs 5,000 ). These are highly trained and well disciplined dogs specialized in personal protection, Crowd control, Patrol and disarming an enemy.

2) Sniffer dogs: The dogs in this category are the english spaniel, highly trained in tracking drugs, firearms, detecting explosives and carrying out complex rescue missions.

Competition is stiff and demand is high for these dogs (come prepared). When it is readvertised you can come and enjoy the chaotic scenes of cutthroat bidding for these magnificent canines.

There are breeders who specialize in belgian malinois and other wolf dogs. at the moment many of them are in Nairobi and Nakuru, You can consult the east african kennel club in Nairobi for various breeders. Kenya Police do not use the belgian malinois mainly because they have a strong prey drive thus more aggressive than the German shepherd, They are also smaller than the German shepherd. German shepherds also have a stronger bite force and their intelligence enables easier training.
In Kenya Belgian Malinois are found in the military where German shepherds lead the way in war and belgian malinois follow behind. Belgian malinois are generally more agile than a German shepherd but trainability takes more effort than a german shepherd.
German shepherds are also popular guard dogs due to their loyalty which also makes them fantastic family pets. The downside to german shepherds is separation anxiety which means they can not be left alone for a very long time. They will be stressed.

The East Africa Kennel Club for more information.

Kumbe Kenya ni mpaka police wauze mbwa?

Tanzania ni biashara ya wajasiriamali wa kawaida na inafanywa wakati wote sio mpaka kusubiri auctions

Yes that is the starting price, then the people start outbidding each other. Previously I have seen highly trained police pure breeds go for as much as kshs 150,000, mainly due to breeders who want to use the police dogs to up the game in their own kennels.

Okay I know I am pitching the police choir to a young black american kid here but let me try to explain. The Kenya polices has dogs, purebred dogs imported from some of the best kennels in the world. These dogs serve the police for a period of time in different capacities , because dogs have a short lifespan (10-14 years).
Now the pure breeds (Not the mongrels peddled on your streets like ground nuts), are in high demand from breeders in kenya and the middle class who want to own highly trained and professional dogs. When a new batch of purebred dogs are acquired by the police from various kennels in Kenya (Kiuna Kennels) and Abroad (UK and America) for training, the older dogs are auctioned to breeders who will then breed and sell the puppies of pure breeds to other companies and individuals.

The breeders also play a crucial role in ensuring local supply of some breeds eg German shepherd, Boerboel, and Rottweilers. It is a cycle, Police import breeds for police work, they then auction them off to breeders and individuals after a period of time, these breeders then ensure a good local supply of the breeds that they then sell to the police too.
