The government has launched a Sh 4.5 billion comprehensive medical cover that will cater for all students in public secondary schools.

Speaking during the launch at State House, Nairobi, President Uhuru Kenyatta on Friday said the cover will benefit some three million students.

"My government will pay a premium of Sh 1,350 for every student under the cover. This will have a phenomenal impact on our economy," Uhuru said.

He added, "The cover which is a negotiated initiative between Ministry of Health and Education ministry is unique as it caters only for students as opposed to the entire family. This will also encourage other family members and guardians to these students enrol for NHIF as we forge ahead to achieving a universal health care".

The head of State said the plan will foster a healthy nation as parents will no longer be under financial constraints to cater for medical bills of the students.

He said in case of accidents, the students will also be able to access medical services under the cover.

"Even as we move medical services close to schools I instruct that schools train Matrons and nurses to provide first responder care. I also instruct the ministry of health to partner with county governments in ensuring that the facilities that serve students are upgraded to the level of NHIF," Uhuru said.
The NHIF and education ministry must ensure that all learners are registered for the cover before schools open. This is part of our Big4 items under Universal health care," Uhuru added.

The President, however, warned the NHIF personell and the education Ministry to ensure that there is an accurate enrollment data to be facilitated by the National Education Management Information System.
He said this will ensure that the funds do not end up in people's pockets.

Uhuru said his government will closely monitor the programe to ensure it serves the purpose.

"I expect all headteachers and principals to fully cooperate with us in this engagement to ensure we fully have the students data. This will put an end to the ghost students," he said.

The most stupid idea in implimenting Universal health cover. School children are already covered under their parents NHIF cover. They should first audit which children are not covered and develop a health insurance cover for them either subsidized to the parents or fully paid for by Government. This will avoid double cover which is a waste of money..but again this is Jubilee and it comes with no brains

Stupid conclusion! Don't assume that all parents of the 3million students are covered. Majority of Kenyans are not formally employed and are in informal sectors with no mechanism to compel them enlist with NHIF even though effort is being applied to that.
Take this as a workplace cover where students under guardianship of teachers and most of the time away from parents can effiently be catered for incase of emergency!

Dr.Kiai is a Physiatrists at Mathari Hospital and would highly recommend you to see Him for some routine checkup. You've been going gaga lately...punguza stress za kuwa jobless my brother.
Pour out your female hormones and do the needful. You are insignificant to me and to many people including your mother.

Who said all parents are covered by NHIF? Few are but atleast all children of teachers, police, civil servants, formal private sector are covered. That is a significant portion of Children. Only a Brainless Government Can use money to Double cover.Money that is actually borrowed

I like the way you pretend to know what you are saying but end up saying shit

Jamaa amekurupuka eti anatoa pointi za maana kumbe hajasoma taarifa yenyewe akajua kinachozungumiwa. Anapropose kuwe na subsidised charges wakati serikali imesema itawalipia wanafunzi hela zote wazazi na hawatozwi hata peni. Akili zake zipo sawa? Soma taarifa utaona.
Not every parent can afford NHIF, BUT the Government has data on parents(adults-through KRA) and can know who to subsidize for and who to completely waive the NHIF fee from. Workers with low wages can be subsidized, while those whose parents are not working or are not within any known gvt data can be waived.
Paying NHIF double for any child whoever good it may be is a waste of money and a kin to tenderprenureship. But you woundt know that because Jubilee disabled your brain.
