Kalangala District Woman Member of Parliament, Hellen Nakimuli, has died following an unsuccessful surgical procedure, in news that has sent shockwaves across Uganda.
According to reports, the legislator passed away on Sunday after complications during surgery, with opposition leader Robert Kyagulanyi among the first to confirm the development publicly.
Nakimuli’s death comes at a critical moment just weeks before the swearing-in of Uganda’s 12th Parliament scheduled for mid-May, where she was expected to take oath after her re-election.
Details surrounding the exact cause of death and the nature of the surgery remain unclear as of now, but reports indicate she passed away from Alexandros Medical Center along Yusuf Lule Road in Kampala.
Tributes and Reactions
Leaders across the political divide have begun mourning the outspoken MP.
Speaker of Parliament Anita Among described her passing as a shock, while fellow legislators and members of her party, the National Unity Platform, called it a “heavy blow.”
The Orthodox Church also paid tribute, noting she was the only re-elected Orthodox legislator in the incoming Parliament.

Earlier, she had also urged religious leaders to speak out on human rights issues, in what now stands as one of her final public messages.
