At least 13 women in Kalangala District have expressed interest in contesting for the Woman Member of Parliament seat following the death of former legislator Helen Nakimuli last month.

Eleven of the aspirants are seeking the opposition National Unity Platform (NUP) ticket, setting the stage for a highly competitive internal race ahead of the anticipated by-election.

Among those seeking the NUP flag are Irene Nampala, a sister to the late Nakimuli, Jessica Nasiwa Tusabe, Roy Nakigozi, Mary Goreti Namuddu, who contested for the party card in 2021, Beatrice Nanyomo Kirabo, Dr Mary Nakitende, Alice Namugerwa, Aisha Nantaayi, journalist Maria Nakitendde, district woman councillor Irene Nakanwagi, and Irene Nabaggala.

Other contenders include Aidah Nabayiga from the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM), Agnes Namakula of the Democratic Party, and an independent candidate.

The growing interest in the seat follows the death of Nakimuli, who was both the sitting Kalangala Woman MP and MP-elect for the incoming Parliament. She died last month after reportedly suffering complications following surgery at Alexandra Medical Centre in Kampala.

According to the Electoral Commission of Uganda, preparations for the by-election are already underway, with stakeholders expected to discuss the roadmap and legal procedures guiding the exercise.
