Minister for Works, Transport and Communications, Prof Makame Mbarawa
Minister for Works, Transport and Communications, Prof Makame Mbarawa, has appointed Hamza Said Johari to be the new director general of the Tanzania Civil Aviation Authority (TCAA).
The minister’s power to appoint is as per Section 33 (1) of the Civil Aviation Act, Principal Legislation Revised Edition 2006.
According to a TCAA statement, Hamza Said Johari’s appointment starts from February 22, this year.
Before his appointment, Hamza Said Johari was the executive secretary of the TCAA Consumer Consultative Council.
Johari is set to fill in the post left by former TCAA acting director general Charles Chacha who was suspended in January following discovery of massive financial and procurement irregularities at the authority. Two other TCAA senior officials were transferred in the same move.
On January 15, Prof Mbarawa was quoted as saying Chacha was removed to pave the way for further investigations into the said irregularities.
He said disciplinary measures taken against the officials resulted from unclear transactions in the purchase of aircraft guiding equipment known as Automatic Dependent Surveillance – Broadcast (ADS–B) valued at Euro 1.5 million, but remained out of order since installation in November, last year.
Mbarawa told the media that he had suspended the TCAA acting DG for incompetence as far as managing revenue collection and procurement procedures were concerned.
