The United States has sharply criticized Kenya’s business environment in a new trade report, describing the country as a hub of corruption where access to lucrative government contracts is often limited to powerful and well-connected individuals.
According to the report, widespread bribery, opaque procurement processes, and complex regulatory barriers continue to hinder fair competition. These challenges, it says, create an uneven playing field that discourages both local and foreign investors.
The findings raise fresh concerns about transparency and governance, with the report warning that significant reforms may be necessary before Kenya can successfully conclude any bilateral trade agreement with Washington.
The assessment is expected to intensify pressure on Kenyan authorities to address corruption and streamline business regulations in order to restore investor confidence and strengthen trade relations with the United States.
